The Melvin Sparks Band came to Rough Magic to record three tracks. Melvin along with Bill Carbone and Beau Sasser ripped up the joint with some of their funky soul flavor. Rough Magic friends Eric Krasno and Adam Deitch even dropped in for a listen.

The Sunday Flies recorded and tracked their fourth release and first full length at Rough Magic Studios, finishing up mixing with star engineer Mike Gibney and mastering engineer Paul Gold this week. Recorded and mixed in full at Rough Magic Studios with the help of upstate producer Jon Stern, with “Lantern on the Sun”, the Flies bring an interesting blend of “poetic rhythm rock” that combines elements as diverse as indie rock, hip hop, folk, blues, metal and funk. Talib Kweli returned yet again to Rough Magic to do some tracking for some of his work and for the upcoming Fyre Dept mix tape coming out soon. While Kweli has been loving our studio for a while now, this time he had something that he wanted other people to know about us. Joe Russo, one half of the Benevento/Russo Duo, recently scored a side gig (that was facetious) as the drummer for Furthur, the current touring band for Phil Lesh and Bob Weir of the Grateful Dead. He recently just played two nights at MCU park in Brooklyn, and we wanted to wish our friend a heartfelt congratulations!!!!! See you when you get off the road.

Rough Magic Studios, Vice Records, and Scion teamed up over the last few months and put out limited edition 7 inch presses. Bands including The Spits, Davilla 666, The Dirtbombs, The Dirtbombs, and Jack Oblivian.
Mauro Refosco, percussionist for Devotchka and Thom Yorke. He came in to do some overdubs for an upcoming Devotchka project.
Eric Krasno, founding member of Soulive and longtime Rough Magic client, celebrate along with his band 10 years playing together. This month at one of our local favorite hangouts, Brooklyn Bowl The band will play for 10 nights in 14 days.
Guitar/Bass Legend Charlie Hunter joined Rough Magic clients Eric Krasno, Adam Deitch, and Nigel Hall in the studio.

Mel Flannery just released her new album We’re Still Here. Mel Cut her vocals here with engineer Alby Cohen who also mixed the LP.

Ledisi (Verve/Universal) was nominated for two 2010 Grammy Awards in the R&B field for her album Turn Me Loose
